What Are Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are insects with aquatic larvae and winged adults that feed on plant nectar and blood. Only female mosquitoes bite, needing the protein in blood to produce eggs. Mosquitoes use internal circadian rhythms and sensitivity to body heat light, carbon dioxide, lactic acid, odor and heat to hunt hosts.

These pests thrive in warm, wet environments, laying eggs in stagnant water sources. Common backyard breeding grounds include bird baths, potted plant trays, clogged gutters, tin cans and tires holding rainwater. Mosquitoes can mature from eggs to flying adults in just 5-7 days during summer heat.

While their buzzing and itchy bites are nuisance enough, mosquitoes also spread dangerous diseases. These include Ross River fever, West Nile virus, malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and encephalitis. Just one infected bite can transmit disease. Mosquito-borne illnesses sicken millions worldwide each year.

Mosquitoes go through four distinct life stages:

  • Egg – Eggs are tiny, dark, and laid singly or attached together in groups on the surface of stagnant water. They hatch into larvae within a few days.
  • Larva – Larvae, often called “wigglers”, live in water and feed on organic debris and microorganisms. They molt several times over 7-14 days before transforming into pupae.
  • Pupa – Pupae, also in water, are usually non-moving and partially encased in a cocoon before emerging 1-4 days later as adult mosquitoes.
  • Adult – Adults males feed on nectar. Females seek out hosts to bite to obtain blood for the protein and iron necessary to produce eggs.

Did You Know About Their Internal Clock?

Mosquitoes have an internal biological clock that influences when they search for food and bite. Mosquitoes tend to be most active and bite more frequently at dusk and dawn.

Our Mosquito Control Process

Trust Pest Control takes a thorough 3-step approach to rid your property of mosquitoes:

1. Inspect

We use environmentally-friendly treatments to eliminate mosquito larvae and apply barrier sprays to keep new mosquitoes out.

2.Treat

We use a range of different types of mosquito treatment depending on the severity of infestation. Most treatments provide up to 3 months of residual protection against mosquitoes. We’ll also advise on changes to make your property less inviting to mosquitoes.

3. Prevent

We address conditions on the property that allow mosquito populations to thrive like standing water and overgrown vegetation. Our prevention tactics break the mosquito lifecycle so they cannot reproduce. We may also install mosquito traps or misting systems for ongoing control.

Electric Mosquito Killers

If you can’t install screens or would prefer an eco-froienbdly approach, you can try this treatment option.

Electric mosquito killers, also called “mosquito zappers”, can help control mosquitoes in your backyard.

Traps are most effective placed 20-40 feet from outdoor living spaces to draw mosquitoes away from areas people frequent.
